Daniel Collins completed a 7 week internship at Getech in Leeds. Working with the palaeogeographic mapping team, he constructed a suite of Late Oligocene to Pliocene bathymetric maps, at 1:5,000,000 scale, for the South China Sea region.
Clara Rodriguez visited the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory (AGL) at the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG), University of Texas at Austin. The AGL is an industry-funded consortium dedicated to producing innovative new concepts in salt tectonics (http://www.beg.utexas.edu/resprog/salttectonics/index.htm). During the visit, Clara Rodriguez presented research focused on evaporites in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil, which led to interesting discussions with the scientists in the research unit. Antje Lenhart has joined the Basins Research Group as a new PhD student. She will work on the role of pre-existing structural fabrics on the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of rift basins, focusing on the Slørebotn sub-basin, Northern North Sea. The project is part of the Norwegian government funded MultiRift project. The main goal is to examine how basement heterogeneities associated with the Caledonian orogeny, Devonian transtension and Permo-Triassic rifting in this area influenced the development of the Late Jurassic rift. To establish these relationships, Antje will conduct detailed structural and stratigraphic analysis using 2D and 3D seismic data, well data, as well as gravity and magnetic data. Antje will be supervised by Chris Jackson, Rebecca Bell, Oliver Duffy, Robert Gawthorpe and Paul Whipp (Statoil). Welcome to the group Antje!
Oliver Duffy and Rebecca Bell (Basins Research Group) and Adriana Paluszny (Rock Mechanics Research Group) successfully applied for research grants totalling £2815 from the Imperial College post-doc collaboration and UROP funds. The grants will fund two summer students to conduct research projects focusing on 3D Finite Element Modelling of normal fault mechanical interactions in multiphase rifts. This forms part of the Norwegian Government-funded 'MultiRifts' project, which includes collaborato rs at the universities of Bergen, Oslo and Manchester.
The Basins Research Group (BRG) at Imperial College London focuses on the geodynamic, struc-tural, and stratigraphic evolution of sedimentary basins. This range of ac-tivities is centred around a multidisciplinary group of Earth Scientists who are committed to understand-ing the fundamental geo-logical processes opera-ting in evolving sediment-ary basins, and the application of this under-standing to determining the nature, origin and occurrence of natural resources (see Themes).
